Multi time World Rally Champion Sebastian Loeb is really looking around the world of motorsport for new challenges. Retiring from the WRC this year he has shifted his focus across to the WEC (World Endurance Championship), already running at the front with his own team racing a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 car. If that wasn’t enough he is looking forward to a future campaign in the WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) with Citroen, possibly next year once thy get their new car ready.
He has also been drawn into a completely new project, tackling the fearsome Pikes Peak Hillclimb on June 30th 2013. The project is being put together by Peugeot Sport, who for 1988 built a one off Peugeot 405 T16 GR which was driven to a new record of 10 Minutes, 47 seconds by Ari Vatanen which stood for a few years after that amazing run.
The new car for the 2013 assault on Pikes Peak is a Peugeot 208 T16, but of course it is a completely purpose built racecar with little resemblance to the actual 208 road car apart from the body styling.
For the stats boffins amongst us, below are the specs, and I suppose one of the most telling ones is 0-100kph (60 MPH) 1.8 seconds. Estimates for current F1 cars are appoximately 2.6 seconds, so when Loeb stands hard on the gas he will be pulling more acceleration g’s that a current F1 driver. Pretty impressive, as is the 273 horsepower per litre.
